I was delighted to find that the second book in the Uplift series is still as good as it was when I was a teen. It features cetaceans, space battles, shipwrecks, conspiracy, and sentience, so nobody can accuse it of being thin. The substance comes with the cetaceans: "uplift" refers to the engineering of other species into sentience and, despite the battles and excitement, Brin's story turns on "humanity", "intelligence", and other contested ideas. I very much enjoyed it and can't wait to reread the third.
