really liked it

This was an interesting book to read. The profession of the lead character, Forensic Librarian, was a new one for me, and it lent well to the story. Aimee Machado begins a new job as the Forensic Librarian for a medical center in Timbergate, north of Sacramento, California. About the time she begins her job, the wife of her boss, Dr. Beardsley, is found dead. The dead woman has a reputation as a wild, carefree woman in the town, and is also involved in drugs. When her brother Harry is implicated in the murder because he was one of the last persons to see the woman, Bonnie, alive, Aimee plunges headfirst into the mysterious events surrounding Bonnie’s death. To complicate matters, Aimee’s recent ex-boyfriend, Nick Alexander, and the young, dashing administrator of the center, Jared Quinn, enter the scene, making things somewhat complicated. The storyline evolves through twists and turns, as Aimee pursues one lead after another to find Bonnie’s killer. I found the story very interesting, with many unique aspects due to the setting and Aimee’s profession, but it did drag a lot in the middle. While interesting to watch Aimee pursued by both men while working to keep her grandparent’s farm going during their vacation, the day-to-day events bogged me down. The characters are well-developed, especially that of Aimee. I enjoyed the repartee between her and her brother, her ex, and the hospital administrator. However, the way she rebuffed Nick’s continuous attempts to reconcile put me off a bit. I also was never quite sure what Jared Quinn’s intentions toward her were. The many characters Aimee encountered, all of whom may or may not have been responsible for Bonnie’s death, kept me guessing about how the mystery would tune out. This is a fairly good mystery, though it does drag somewhat. I think any fan of mysteries would enjoy reading this one. I appreciated a story with the lead having a new profession, and this profession did not get in the way as I feared it might at the start.
