I had interesting conversation about this book with others who read it, on the nature of Merton's faith and the strong links to Mary and the Church. The Foreword was helpful to read, as it pointed out some cultural differences between then and now to keep in mind as one reads.

Not being too familiar with the genre, I wasn't sure how an autobiography would end -- what resolve would Merton place on this story of his life? -- so I did the unthinkable, skipped to the end. I was not disappointed! The resolution seems to tie together the purposes of the book well, and shows clearly Merton's apologetic nature. I did go back and finish from the middle on, and appreciated the resolve coming more and more into focus.

If nothing else, Merton is a captivating writer.
