There are things I really liked about this book. There had been plenty of foreshadowing about Thom causing problems with his magical power and lack of knowledge of anything else, and the thing he did took me by surprise and was interesting. Good "go big" fun plot point. Meeting Thayet and some of the action in the war-torn place is good too.

Alanna starts sleeping with another powerful guy until fate and plot lead her back to the right place to settle. At least she does settle down and seems to be a good family warrior champion in the next series.

The confrontations continue the series trend of being totally anti-climactic. She gets the jewel from the bored elemental who just wants to toy with her for awhile? Roger sets up this ingenious plan and she yells, has one tiny struggle, and cleverly kills him? After a bunch of decent set-up, the final fights are just blah. Plus, the whole magic jewel of prosperity deal seems kind of lame. (If the next two books of the next series don't lead back to this incredibly powerful jewel, it will be even lamer that it gets pulled out for the final book and then ignored.)

Still better and more logical than the middle two.
