I wanted so badly to love this book! The cover, title, seemed to be a book I would love. But I didn't. I get that it's important: a story from the viewpoint of a young black girl I'm segregated NC in the 30s, having to deal with the local KKK. The book starts off with a bang but slid into dullness quickly, all the way to the anticlimactic ending. Things do happen, but the story felt weak. And the writing felt cheesy in that way that so much middle grade does now, sort of contrived and like it's written down for kids.

So sad I didn't enjoy this book!
