Better than J.D. Salinger, John Brandon takes the reader into the life of a young adolescent, Toby McNurse, who commits a terrible crime and becomes the author of his own life. Toby's foils, Shelby Register and Mr. Hibma their teacher, remain characters although they try to become authors. There is so much packed into this short novel that I might have to read it again. It literally chilled me to the bone while at the same time delighting me with artful descriptions and turns of phrase. If his other two novels are as good as this one, I might have to add Brandon to the short list of authors whose books I actually buy to keep forever instead of borrowing them from the library.
