really liked it

3.5 stars. I like the premise and the introductions to the edition I read. Davis doesn't seem to take herself too seriously, which I appreciate, since she's straight up written a detective novel set in ancient Rome.

It's a tiny bit of a clunker in the beginning and end, but the middle is excellent. The detectives in this genre tend to blend into homogenous straight-guy pap, but Falco is a bit spicier than usual. This is a great summer read in that it's short and doesn't consume your brain while you read it.
