Gen is a thief who ends up in the King's prison due to his big mouth. The King offers to release Gen from prison and reward him with gold if he will accompany Magus into a far country to steal a hidden treasure. Gen really has no choice and the next day the guards remove him from his cell and take him to Magus. Magus is joined by Pol, Ambiades, and Sophos and the group heads off on a mighty adventure that reveals their strengths and weaknessess.

Turner does a nice job creating rounded characters that charm, annoy, and amuse the reader. I would agree that the story is rather slow in the beginning and it is difficult to stay with it. However, I did enjoy Gen's character and found his experience in the temple very engaging.
I would recommend the book to experienced readers.
