bookshelves: crime, fiction, unfinished

This Ancient-Rome-set mystery, about a senator’s daughter in trouble, feels wafer-thin and lacking in engrossing period detail. Lindsey Davis gets so caught up in her hero’s character voice and his ‘witty’ asides that, at times, I genuinely struggled to follow what was happening with the plot. Perhaps the choice to make each chapter no longer than four pages (!) was designed to make the pace feel zippy. In reality, it just meant that I kept thinking, wait, how many chapters do I have to read before something actually happens?

I slogged on to page 100 and now I’m giving up. File under: good idea; poor execution.
