it was ok
bookshelves: first-reads

** spoiler alert ** The author's writing style intrigued me, several times I chuckled at a clever turn of phrase, and I kept waiting to like this book. But nothing really ever happened. A few changes of scenery and a drab cast of characters gave me little other than a "meh" feeling.

The characters have few redeeming qualities, and it feels like they are intent on making sure that the reader does not care one whit about them. The author displays a series of worthless men and the main character makes herself dependent on each of these men for her survival. From the beginning, it is clear that she is doomed to failure, and when the story ends with her giving up her running and booking a hotel room on a credit card stolen from one of the worthless men, it seems that she knows it too. It didn't make me sad, it didn't make me happy, I just didn't care.

I received "Bad Marie" for free from GoodReads First-Reads.
