it was amazing
bookshelves: ecology, terrifying, landscape-politics

I read half of this while Tommy and I were in Cape Cod. By the time I got to the Norse Greenland settlements, I was just panicking and slinging back glasses of wine while incoherently babbling to Tommy about the necessity to "pay attention to what happened on Easter Island," which in turn later degenerated into something sort of like "the horror, the horror."

Needless to say, I took a little break from it. I picked it up again last week and managed to keep my composure. I think accusations of bias are coming from a place of deep bias. Diamond has presented us with an incredible resource, one which, if I had been present before the collapse of some of these societies, would have seemed like a gift from God. We can look at the world around us, look at what has happened to past societies, and then look honestly at ourselves and see what needs adjustment. Or we can ignore the real problems. But we certainly can't say we haven't been given in-depth information and analysis.
