I enjoyed reading this book – it was beautifully written with a lot of care. It was an engaging tale set in the world of Earthsea. Ged is an intriguing main character, whose flaws are obvious from the get-go and yet you somehow can’t help siding with him, and liking him. However, the story did not set off any sparks for me – maybe because it didn’t feel particularly original. The characters felt a little clichéd, there wasn't enough character development, not enough development of relationships, and too much telling and not enough showing and feeling. I think I would have really enjoyed it had I first encountered it in primary school, however I still liked it, and would certainly give the other two books in the trilogy a shot some day.
