it was amazing
bookshelves: fantasy-high, classics, ya
Read from July 12 to 17, 2010

I've thought about reading this book for a long time, and I'm glad I finally did - it is obvious why it is a fantasy classic echoed in so much modern fiction. The story of Ged, who is unusually gifted and will someday be a great wizard, who sets free terrible evil in the world and must deal with it, follows the hero cycle perfectly. As a reader, this is immensely satisfying even when one is not a fantasy fan. The style is legendesque - you know, like a ballad or beowulf or something - which is not my cup of tea but LeGuin is so deft that it becomes easy to read almost immediately.
