I was told that before I should read this book, I should read the Girl with the Pearl Earring. I am not sure I agree with that. The Girl with the Pearl Earring was such a better book, written so beautifully, that I don't think I enjoyed Girl in Hyacinth Blue as much as I would if I had have just read it. And as both are fictional, it hardly needs to be read in any historical order. Both books are about a painting by Johannes Vermeer.

Girl in Hyacinth Blue follows a painting by dutch artist Johannes Vermeer from its creation, in the 1600's, to the present day. I enjoyed the tales of why each owner loved the painting and felt that it spoke to them of a time in their lives.
