After 19 years March and her 15 yr old daughter go to a small Mass. town for the funeral of a close family friend, but March is not letting herself see the truth about why she really wanted to go back. She left when she was desperately in love with a young man who had left the area for his own reasons, but neither one of them ever resolved their feelings for each other, so they come together in great passion, but the young man, no longer young begins to exhibit unnatural possession, cutting off social interaction with others. Her daughter, who was spoiled and on her way to real trouble back home sees that she has to take over since her mother was no longer emotionally capable. She grows up and gets to know family and becomes involved taking care of an old race horse. When her mother's beau becomes physically abusive towards her she calls her father to send her tikets to return home. Her mother also fianlly wakes up and also leaves. Very complex story about how a person can get so deeply emotionnally involved with another and can't see how distructive the relationship has become.
