This starts out very simlar to The Golden Compass (with the talking polar bear and the life quest and the young girl) but the comparison ends quickly.

Bear, the Polar Bear King, is a mystical being bringing souls to the newborn cubs in the arctic region. Cassie is an 18-year-old human research assistant at her father's research station in Alaska. Cassie is tricked into marrying the Polar Bear King in order to release her mother from captivity. She learns to love him and finds herself immersing herself in his soul saving task. Cassie uses the information the station collects on polar bear births to help Bear with his task. Life in the Arctic is dangerous and deadly. This book brings those dangers up close and personal. This is a really sweet story suitable for any age but I think pre-teens would enjoy it the most.
