really liked it
bookshelves: 33-1-3, music

good - I learned a lot about Neil Young and the making of the record but I was surprised at how critical this book was of much of the album when the author began the book by stating his own incredulity of how die-hard fans are so critical of the album. He then goes on to say that Harvest lacks the emotional depth of most of Young's other albums and that it is too sleek and "fine" rather than great. I'm no huge Neil Young fan by any means, but I do find that Harvest is one of my favorites of his and contains some superb songwriting, whereas most of the other Young albums I've heard are very hit-or-miss. Maybe I just think that the authors of these 33 1/3 books should decide from the start whether they're going to be fully objective or completely subjective, because most of the time I could give a shit if someone else thinks an album I love is good or not.
