it was ok
bookshelves: read-and-commented

Actually, my two-star ratings sums it up real nice: "it was ok"!

The narration never grows on you. Mary never really tries to connect to the reader: neither emotionally nor intellectually. 95% of the narration is pretty boring, monotonous. A documentary could drone on much better.

Mary's story-telling is distant, aloof, detached. The only reason to continue reading the book for me was that the fact the book presented, did matter. The form sucked, the content was good. For example, the book sheds some light on state of non-cricket sports in India.

If you can draw inspiration from the facts, regardless how boringly they are presented, you might actually find this book to be a treasure trove! Mary's extremely humble beginnings and her momentous achievements leave one dazed and humbled. Read it for that.
