I Am Legend

Before reading this it's probably best to try and forget the various movie incarnations of Matheson's post-vampocalypse classic; it's set in suburban Los Angeles, not New York, and Matheson's protagonist is just a working stiff, not a genius Navy doctor. Many of the tropes will seem familiar in the age of The Walking Dead and the Prepper movement, but it's important to remember that this book is where it all started. The minutia of day-to-day survival in a world ruled by the undead form the central thread of the narrative, but it's the portrait of a man driven to insanity and monstrous cruelty by isolation that really impresses. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel... well, pretty lousy about it actually.
