Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies
expanded my mind with lots of new information . it was a great read in parallel with my recent reading of Lewis and Clark and with hearing a series of podcasts on the Mongol Empire of Chingis Khan and his successors. in fact, the Mongols were an answer to a question posed by Diamond in the epilogue: why Europe and not Islam or China? the answer is within a century of Europe's explorations, Chingis had obliterated China and the most powerful caliphates' power and slaughtered tens of millions in those places.
