** spoiler alert ** Spoilers may follow. Vague ones, but spoilers nonetheless.

I really don't understand why anyone's calling this a fresh take on anything. I can't be motivated to write anything longwinded about this book because it's basically a bunch of other books thrown together. Mostly King's "The Stand," with a dollop of Matheson's "I Am Legend," a bit of Koontz's "Watchers" and a lot of the film "28 Days Later." Good prose, but ridiculously unoriginal, down to exact SCENES sometimes (waiting out the snow in the hotel = DIRECTLY from "The Stand"; debris blocking stairwell up a tower = DIRECTLY from "28 Days Later"; dog leads man to a showdown in the barn w/monster = DIRECTLY from "Watchers"). The most intriguing characters, to me, took a backseat to boring archetypal ones, and the dialogue was almost laughable at points. I found myself struggling to follow some action scenes, and the book's a solid 300 pages too long. I'm not sure if I have it in me to read two more of these hulking, derivative monstrosities.
