I picked this book up knowing very little about it. I only knew that Brooks used the characters from Little Women. This book caused a lot of contemplation on war and justice and our role and place in working for justice. March was so clearly set in his ideals and ways and the horrors and the reality of war and slavery shattered his idealist notions. He so badly wanted to fix the world of so many wrongs and his inability do so haunted him.

While this book is far from perfect in its representations of the characters as idealists myself I felt the pain of Mr. March and and his desire for the world and the people in it to be better (including himself), but an inability to know where and how to start in the face of such pain and evil.
