This is the third book in the Honor Harrington series--military SF with a dash of space opera. IMO, the series is best read in order; otherwise you won't be able to follow references to earlier events. The story arc is similar to that of On Basilisk Station and Honor of the Queen. To wit, Honor, captain of a spanking new battlecruiser, is put in an untenable position--outgunned and left to defend a star system. As with earlier books, she makes it through, but with terrible losses and lots of drama. As an avid reader of SF romance, I appreciated the new love interest. I just hope he doesn't get killed off in the next installment...

SPOILER: I am more relieved than I can say that Adm Mark Sarnow survived Hancock Station. He's totally swoon-worthy.
