Sookie has had a rough few months, and in this latest installment of the series she focuses on recovering from the fairy war, her injuries, and the loss of friends and family. Her roommate Amelia moves home to New Orleans, her grandfather locks himself into the fairy realm, her friend Tara finds out she's expecting twins, vampire Bill is struggling to recover from silver poisoning, and Sam and the other two-natured weres are busy trying to keep legislation from passing that would make them second-class citizens. Her brother is even settling down into a serious relationship and seems to be maturing. All in all, life has gotten lonely for Sookie.

So it's not a big surprise that she's spending a lot of time with the Viking vampire, Eric. He saved her life, and she's now had so much blood from him that she can't take anymore without risking turning into a vampire herself. She doesn't want that... or does she?

As a good series ebbs and flows, you need installments like this one. It's a little quieter, a little more introspective. And it sets the scene for a shake-up in the books to come.
