Sumiko is a twelve year old girl who is growing up in California just before the events of Pearl Harbor. Sumiko and her Japanese American family are flower farmers and are loyal citizens of the United States. After Pearl Harbor, the family is sent to the Poston internment camp in Arizona. This camp is on an Indian reservation and Sumiko becomes friends with an Indian boy, Frank. This is a great book that really gives you a good idea of what it was like for the Japanese forced to live in internment camps.
