did not like it

Oh man. Two back-to-back one-star ratings of popular authors in one night. I feel a little bad, but I just did not like this novel.

I picked up this book in a cruise library and opened it to a random section, and that section was pretty good! I had previously tried Baldacci's "The Target." Baldacci's Will Robie character seemed more wooden and emotionless than a bookshelf. So I was happy to encounter two characters (Sean King and Michelle Maxwell) who were sympathetic, could joke around, but could also take care of themselves.

The book started well as crime fiction, but quickly morphed into a thriller where King and Maxwell take on some very powerful opponents. Opponents who are arguably too powerful to believe. The other reason I couldn't suspend disbelief is that the book doesn't age well in a post-Snowden world. At several points, the surveillance that does or doesn't happen just isn't realistic enough to believe.

At this point, it's safe for me to conclude that David Baldacci isn't for me. And that's okay. If you like him, power to you.
