The countdown to impact continues; Earth has 77 days left and scientists have announced the probable impact zone to be near Indonesia. Hank Palace has been "retired" from the Concord, New Hampshire, Police Department along with the rest of his remaining colleagues -- those that hadn't already gone "bucket list", that is. Their replacements are distinctly military in nature and don't seem as much interested in solving crimes as they are in maintaining some semblance of a social order: read curfew enforcement and looting patrol. Hank wanders about town, visiting his favorite restaurant and wondering where his sister Nico has gone, but otherwise he does nothing. Then an old family friend asks for his help. Her husband has gone missing; will Hank find him for her?

Hank suspects the husband has gone bucket list like so many other missing people, but he agrees to look into the disappearance. Meanwhile, the countdown to Armageddon ticks on, and now refugees from southeast Asia are beginning to make their way to the coasts of America.

Ben Winters paints a grimly plausible picture of a collapsing society on the brink of extermination. Hank Palace is one of said society's few remaining lights, and someone with whom it's worth spending one's last few precious days.
