Although this book has the feel of a fantasy novel, it is important to note that it is also technically science fiction because it is set on a colony world in the distant future which, due to the threat of deadly "Threads" that fall from the sky, has backed away from technology over time resulting in a pre-industrial society with the added bonus of geneticly engineered dragons to fight the "Thread."

This book is part of Anne McCaffery's "Pern" novels, most of which are written for adults. This is the 2nd of the "Harper Hall Trilogy" which are a subset of the "Pern" books and is written for young readers.
