really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy, historical-novel

Intense and compelling fantasy of late colonial American history that is just a little different from the reality, especially because magic is alive in the land. Great characters include: Alvin Maker, Sr., a skeptic who does believe in the power of his son Alvin, Jr., the seventh son of a seventh son; Bill the itinerant Taleswapper, a man of insight who helps Alvin and his family; and Rev. Thrower who is seduced by the devil. This is the first in a series and ends when Alvin is ten years old and has survived a terrible accident.
