I came to this book after watching Cronenberg's discomforting movie adaption and became a fan of Ballard's work. Transforming car crashes into a modern fetish feels like a natural evolution of the our love affair with car culture. The book indulges in homoerotica that I do not recall explored in the film, but it is the brutal and darkly thrill-seeking sexuality of the book that resonated with me and encouraged me to explore more of his work. Ballard often explores psycho-sexual relationships and the unexpected; it allows you to explore subjects that you may not feel comfortable with, one of the hallmarks of an engaging author.
