Vargas undoubtedly has a flair for very creative settings to her crime novels...werewolves in southern France, the return of the bubonic plague in today's Paris. She is also gifted for dialogue, which, in her novels, is always well-crafted and suspenseful. She doesn't do quite as well when she tries to take her books a step up, from pleasurable summer readings to literary works of art. Sometime she indulges a little too long in pages of psychoanalysis of her characters, which often turn boring and mostly feel unneeded. Overall a peculiar, unique author nonetheless...
