Allende's most recent novel was about a slave/concubine who was born on the Dominican Republic, the daughter of one of the countless women kidnapped from Africa and sold into slavery. The story takes place in the Dominican in the late 1700's, and later in the United States. I found some of the character's decisions frustrating, but they took place in a context that I won't ever be able to understand - and at a time when your opinion only mattered if you were a white man. As usual, Allende weaves a very detailed plot and tells her story beautifully.
