One Second After (After, #1)

I read this book at the suggestion of a friend. I'm not going to sugarcoat it: it's a kind of a gut punch. It follows events in a small mountain town in North Carolina after an electromagnetic pulse disables all modern electronic devices in the United States: cars, refrigeration, and of course the internet.
As you might guess, the book includes some pretty bleak scenes. If I were just rating the book for enjoyment, I'd give it maybe 3.5 stars. But this book affected me in a way that few books have since The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. It may tempt you to pick up a 50 pound bag of rice to store in your house, or to sign up for a first responder course. For that, I'll give it 5 stars.
For a non-fiction book that covers a similar subject (how to react to the end of the world as we know it?) from a different angle, try Emergency, by Neil Strauss. See my review of Emergency from 2009 if you're interested.
