An unusual book for its author.

This is a book where every single page is loaded with scientific fact. The reason for the unusual nature is that it doesn't have the usual flowing narrative that entice people to Bill Bryson's.

Whilst it's not Bryson's best work (in my opinion), it is comfortably his most comprehensive work. Anybody with a casual interest in science will use this as their bible. The book is probably good for academic study too
