Sara Linton is back in Grant County for the holidays. She finds it hard to be back without her husband, who was the police chief there, and was killed in the line of duty.

Lena Adams, who is a detective in Grant County, is called out to investigate the murder of a woman found in a lake. It is ruled as murder, and the investigation begins.

However, things turn topsy-turvy when the suspect commits suicide in jail. Suddenly, it doesn't seem as clear anymore, and it looks like everyone has something to hide. Sara Linton calls for reinforcements, and she is reunited with Special Agent Will Trent. It seems like everyone is trying to confuse Will, but slowly and methodically, he unravels the tangled stories with the help of Sara.

I'm not sure whether this could be a stand-alone book, I don't think so as there were lots of references to the past, which those reading for the first time wouldn't understand. But to those who have read Karin Slaughter's previous books, it's fascinating to see how everything ties together in the end, especially with Jared, Lena's new boyfriend. Suspenseful till the end!
