I'm divided on how I felt about this book. The narrative interweaves the stories of half a dozen protagonists, which would be lovely except that only two (or one, if you're feeling uncharitable) of those threads is adequately resolved by the book's end. I also didn't care for the writing style, even though I'm usually a fan of clean, spare prose, and I found Haruf's affectation of omitting quotation marks and other dialogue tags frustrating.

On the other hand, Haruf did a great job of capturing small town Colorado, and he wrote several interesting and sympathetic characters whose stories I enjoyed following. I'm not sure if I care enough to bother with the sequel, though.
