Tara is a “recovery specialist”, or better known to most people as a hired thief. She is hired by people to steal back items that have been stolen from them. She’s sort of a Robin Hood, but instead of stealing money, she steals property. So when she’s working a job one night, breaking into a house, she is apprehended by a private security officer. But he’s not just any private security officer; he’s Jake Forsythe, Tara’s former partner in crime and almost love interest.

Tara and Jake grew up together, Jake not exactly coming from the best of circumstances. Tara and Jake used to steal together and they came close to becoming an item, but when Jake left at eighteen to join the military, Tara never saw him again. When Jake returns to Tara’s life however, it is readily apparent that they are still very much attracted to each other. Jake though, having been through war and back, is not sure he can commit to Tara, thinking that she deserves far better than him.

Jake works for the Schillings Agency, which is a private security firm that is comprised of several ex-military. The owner, Cooper, was the main character in the first book and makes an appearance in this book. The Schillings Agency, in addition to offering muscle, also installs security systems, and it is the security system that Tara had managed to breach in a subsequent job that Jake needs her help with. In order to patch the flaw that allowed Tara to gain entry to her mark’s home, she needs to provide Jake with the code and the patch. She is looking at jail time if she doesn’t comply, but her principles, which have her stealing from the bad guy to help the good guy, keep her from wanting to help. Will she make the right choice to keep herself out of jail? Will that decision decide the fate of her and Nick’s relationship?

Stealing His Heart was a quick, easy read. While it is the second in the Schillings Agency series, it can be read as a standalone. The characters were well developed and I loved the history that Jake and Tara shared. Ms. Alberts did an excellent job of interspersing just enough of their past with their current situation to create a steamy story of second chance love. The storyline, while slightly brief, was well written. This was an easy four star read for me.
