really liked it

i read 'the commitments' - my second novel of 2010 - and all in one sitting! actually, i stood up for some of the time. i was on the beach with my sister and the pages just flew by. it was great. i kept thinking, for the whole first half of the novel, 'okay... this is the build-up, soon we'll be in the middle of a real story...' but then i realized, there was no build-up, it was all story the whole time. i don't know what i was thinking, or if this even makes sense, or why i'm sharing this thought. it was good though. it felt great to read a whole story start to finish

the characters are good, as far as i can tell. they seem real. and every time the plot advances, another little problem bubbles up, and it all keeps lightly effervescing til the very end. also there seemed to be very few epiphanies or anything, it was more like watching tv, like just seeing these characters interact. nothing heavy-handed happened. i liked the 'wit' of the characters the best probably, i like how wit revealed the insecurities and interesting angles of their personalities, like it does in real life
