** spoiler alert ** I liked Doctor Sleep much better than I liked The Shining. I like how it is definitely a sequel, but I think you could read Doctor Sleep as a stand-alone novel as well. Events from The Shining are mentioned and referred to, but King does a great job of explaining what happened so that anyone who didn't read The Shining (or only watched the movie, which was totally different) wouldn't be lost. I wouldn't say this book is "scary" at all, but it definitely had some pretty suspenseful scenes. I liked the characters. I was a little surprised at how happy clappy (and sappy) the ending was. It all tied up in a neat little package with all of the bad guys dead and not a hair out of place for any of the good guys. That surprised me. But overall, I really enjoyed this book.
