A real emotional roller coaster--I think it's fair to be able to say that my levels of despair ran on a bell curve over the course of the novel. By the middle I was ready to put it down, so upset was I over the loss of a few key characters. But I kept pushing through, and was rewarded by increasingly awesome reappearances, plot twists, and character development. In the NYT's book review of A Dance with Dragons, they propose that Martin is not just the American Tolkien--he is better. I haven't read enough of Lord of the Rings to make my own call, but I will certainly be comparing the two when I finally do.
