Part historical thriller part police procedural. Personally I think it would have worked better as a straight thriller. Found myself ploughing through an overly long introduction waiting for it to pick up speed but it never did. Couldn't quite believe the same person who wrote The Snowman wrote this. Didn't care about the characters or the plot and found myself speed reading chunks of descriptive prose (which I never do). However, Harry Hole is magnificent and the biggest redeeming feature of the book; with his sardonic wit and abject misery you can't help but see him as 100% human.
Hasn't put me off Nesbø and I will read the others I own in the series. Have a feeling he gets better.
