A disjointed chronological stroll through Jackson's presidency. Meacham intended, he claims in his concluding note, to present an intimate biographical portrait of the man and his entourage, but neither Jackson nor the cast of minor players surrounding him came to life in any memorable, meaningful fashion.

I remember in particular being underwhelmed by the many pages spent recounting the Petticoat Affair. This undeniably dramatic soap opera was conveyed with almost deadpan listlessness by Meacham.

I almost stopped reading at page 300/360 but soldiered through to the finish. Two stars not one because, hey, this is Jackson.
