The Kurt Wallander series hooked me on Mankell and when this book popped up on my Book-A-Day calendar I got it. I was missing Kurt and this one was a struggle for me to finish -- but I did. The protagonist was a tightly wrapped, emotionally stunted archeologist who used her carefully acquired skills to probe the mysterious death of her son. The story was at times confusing but at the end the author suggests that some of the horrific events written about may indeed be true. No spoilers here but it was very compelling in its entirety.
