Set in New York City in 1974, this novel tells a beautiful story of a collection of very diverse lives. Each chapter is told from the perspective of a different character. Together these individual stories carry the reader through a journey along many different walks of life, filled with the ups and downs of love, loss, happiness and grieving. A focal point of the novel is the tightrope walk made between the twin towers in 1974. The characters' reactions to this event lead the reader to reflect on the inspiring nature of the tightrope walk compared to the devastating tragedy of 9/11.

Column McCann is a brilliant writer. Each sentence is beautifully crafted and woven into a story that leaves the reader truly moved. This is the best novel I have read in quite a while.
