Alcatraz Smedry discovers that he's an occulator from the free lands (that is, the unknown-to-us parts of the world outside of that controlled by evil librarians) and, with his exceptional talent (breaking things), accompanies his grandfather on a mission to recover his inheritance .

The ideas in this books are wonderfully fun, but it was hard for me to deal with the interrupting asides and the main character's assurances that he was not a good person. The tale kept me awake on the ride home and gave me plenty of delightfully weird details to consider.
