it was amazing
bookshelves: politics-and-history

Lilla gives us a sobering sample of 20th century European philosophers (Heidegger, Derrida, Schmitt etc) who were attracted to totalitarian movements of one kind or another.
Lilla's essays throw light onto a larger question about the obsessive and sometimes tyrannical love of perfection. The excellent closing essay "The Lure of Syracuse" draws out some lessons from the story of Plato, Dion, and Dionysus on the same theme.
