It is a classic and in the end I really enjoyed this book. I told myself that no matter what, I would finish despite temptation to put it down whenever Tolstoy started with the long diatribes on the seeming futility of human destiny or on the meaning behind history. As enlightening as his views are, they can be quite the trial to read and understand. I would recommend this to anyone as an enlightening look into one man's version of Russia's place in the war against Napolean. I enjoyed the snapshots into Russian culture.
