This love story takes place in the last setting one could imagine finding romantic love.

The book is told from the first person viewpoint of three characters. Paul Doll, fictional commandant of Auschwitz, is one of them. Martin Amis has a history of writing despicable characters. He does it quite well. In Paul Doll he's outdone himself, giving us a most vile character indeed. Paul Doll keeps telling us "I'm a normal man." I have little doubt this is a common deceit among abnormal men.

It's a love story, yes. But not a bodice ripper. Instead, it's a love story with a body count.

Not for the squeamish.
