Loved it! It's the story of two sisters who are forced to leave Shanghai and enter into arranged marriages in Los Angeles in order to pay off their father's gambling debt, even though by 1937 arranged marriages were technically illegal. It's one of those sagas that takes place over a few decades, wherein misfortune after misfortune happens, with a few good things peppered throughout. Still, I liked learning about 1930s-1940s Los Angeles, as well as the changing attitudes toward Chinese Americans.
