Difficult to write anything new here. The author is dying - although he started the book before his diagnosis - and so is the narrator's father. The search for the missing videotape is not credible and the circumastances of its recovery even less so. But this is harsh.
The narrator Kit being 'on the spectrum' is a masterstroke because it allows him to have distance and intense involvement at the same time.
At times, the drunken conversations reminded me of The Secret History and the nods towards Peter's Friends are obvious.
Kit has a thing about measuring people and Banks encourages the reader to weigh up his characters - is this a good or bad person? His clever trick is to keep us guessing right to the end.
